Rock Chips |
| |
No doubt - Calgary is a city where
you have to live with rock chips. But it also has to be put into
consideration, that there are factory paint jobs, which are not
standing up to factory standards. For a car, which was driven for
43,000km the amount of chips shown above are a little high.. but
still explainable, but how will Mercedes-Benz explain the chips on
the top of the hood (below) |
 |
| |
There can be more
chips found on the tail gate of this ML320 than on our 6-year old
van, and there are 2 chips starting to rust on the top of the doors
(below the window molding) |
 |
| |
The picture above shows the area
around the passenger's door handle. If I listen to Hans Fechner from
Mercedes-Benz, they are caused by 'bouncing rocks'. How in hell can
a rock bounce to the passenger's door? |
| |
If you look at
these pictures, you will realize, that the chips are not going to
the metal - all of them show the white primer. Almost all
manufacturer are painting today in a so-called wet-in-wet system;
this means, that the primer is not totally dry, when the paint is
applied and this will give a solid bind between primer and paint. |
| |
The primer on this
vehicle was obviously cured before the base and clear coat was
applied and this the only explanation, why there are rock chips on
the doors, tailgate and roof. |

Hans Hefner from Mercedes-Benz
Canada claims, that these rock chips are normal - sorry Hans, don't
think that Mercedes-Benz customers are fools! |
